Vying for the 2010 Paralympics
TELUS Para-Alpine Canadian Championships: Mar 23-26, 2009
March 12, 2009 – Sun Peaks, BC – One year from today the opening ceremonies for the 2010 Paralympic Games will take place in Vancouver/Whistler. With the goal of the podium in mind, Para-Alpine athletes will be gathering at Sun Peaks Resort later this month to vie for a spot on the Canadian Paralympic Team.
Sun Peaks will be hosting two inspirational events March 22-27, 2009 during Adaptive Sports Awareness Week.
The TELUS Para-Alpine Canadian Championships will run at Sun Peaks March 23-26. Taking place in the Nancy Greene International Race Centre, over 65 athletes are expected for this event and will race in several categories, depending on their disability and ski method. Some of the skiers are visually impaired and require the assistance of a guide during the race down the mountain. Other athletes suffer from a spinal injury, cerebral palsy or amputation.
As these athletes compete for a spot on the National Team, another group of disabled skiers will be overcoming challenges on the slopes of Sun Peaks during the Canadian Association for Disabled Skiing (CADS) Ski Improvement & Race Development Festival. Over 100 Para-athletes and their families will be participating in ski improvement clinics and learning the fundamentals of Para-alpine racing.
Join us at Sun Peaks as we support disabled athletes in their quest to challenge extensive obstacles and prove that having a disability won’t limit them from enjoying winter sports.
